The Fine Art of Receiving

It recently came to my attention that some people selflessly give and give. Yet those same people struggle with the art of receiving. Most of us love to give because it makes us feel good. However, the ability to gracefully receive is just as important. It's part of the cycle.

Refusing gifts (compliments, unexpected acts of kindness) may stop the flow of positivity in our lives. Some people feel undeserving and believe that gifts have to be "earned." Others feel vulnerable and believe that by accepting a gift, they then "owe" the giver. But we can't keep giving and giving as if we are a bottomless, never-ending, self-generating well of generosity. It's unrealistic. Giving without allowing something back can, over time, push us out of balance. The ability to receive is, in fact, essential to physical health, psychological well-being and spiritual engagement. Being able to give and receive free of guilt and power dynamics is key to an enriched and balanced life.

Giving in to the universe and receiving from the universe is a constant cycle and both are necessary to keep the flow going. With the holiday season just around the corner take that radical step (without excuses or apologies) to practice receiving with a smile and a "thank you." Receive with grace and a grateful heart.
